Carpentry
Since childhood, I have helped with various carpentry projects, from building garden beds to set pieces. I have access to a family wood shop that is equipped with a table saw, chop saw, drill press, rotary sander, orbital sander, Dremel rotary tool, drills, and more. Woodworking and carpentry are some of my favorite theatrical projects.
Bridge Project.
For my scenery class (TA111) at Mt. Hood Community College, we were assigned a bridge project. The goal was to use limited materials (six strips of wood and wood glue) to design a bridge able to withstand 40 pounds. The bridge were set across a “canyon” of actor blocks and tested to failure. My bridge withstood over 400 lbs of force.
Flat Construction.
I have also learned how to properly construct a flat. For scenery class (TA111), I fabricated a muslin flat and used a variety of carpentry tools (chop saw, drill) as well as Dutchman technique to apply the muslin.
Pencil Cup.
In scenery class (TA111), were were given a series of abstract drawings to select and draw orthographic projections and fabricate the object. I selected the pencil cup, which I drafted in VectorWorks. A copy of my drafting can be found here. I used Unicorn Spit stain to finalize the pencil cup.
Rolling platform.
For my high school senior project at Silverton High School, I directed a black box production of Macbeth. For the minimal set, we used a portable platform with stairs. I constructed the platform with wheels and stops for safety. I built this platform with my dad and we donated it to the high school, where it was repurposed for many productions.
